2016 Chinese Silver Panda 10 Yuan 30g .999 Silver Bullion Coin – Shenzhen Guobao Mint
Marking an important change in one of the world’s most recognisable precious-metal programmes, the 2016 Chinese Silver Panda was the first standard Silver Panda issued using a metric weight of 30 grams.
Struck from 30 grams of .999 fine silver, equivalent to approximately 0.9645 Troy ounces, this landmark release features a beautifully detailed giant panda resting across the branches of a tree.
Issued under the authority of the People’s Bank of China with a legal-tender denomination of 10 Yuan, the coin combines internationally recognised Chinese imagery with an important place in the development of the Silver Panda series.
The First Metric Silver Panda
Before 2016, the standard Chinese Silver Panda contained one full Troy ounce of silver. For the 2016 precious-metal coin programme, China replaced the traditional Troy-ounce measurements with metric weights.
The standard Silver Panda was consequently changed from one Troy ounce, or approximately 31.10 grams, to precisely 30 grams.
This makes the 2016 coin particularly notable as the first release of the metric Silver Panda format that continues to be used today. It represents a clear dividing point within the series and has additional appeal amongst collectors building complete Panda date collections.
The 2016 Giant Panda Design
The panda side depicts a solitary giant panda resting across a sturdy tree branch.
The panda is shown gripping the branch with its paws whilst looking outward, with the detailed engraving capturing its distinctive facial markings, fur and relaxed posture. A textured bamboo forest fills the background, creating an attractive sense of depth.
The coin’s denomination of 10 Yuan appears below the branch, alongside the inscriptions “30g Ag .999”, confirming its weight, metal and silver purity.
The use of contrasting frosted and reflective finishes helps separate the panda from its surroundings and showcases the detailed engraving for which the Chinese Panda series is recognised.
Temple of Heaven Design
The opposing side features the magnificent Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, located within Beijing’s historic Temple of Heaven complex.
The circular triple-gabled building is portrayed from the front, with its surrounding stone terraces and steps rendered in fine detail.
The Chinese inscription for the People’s Republic of China appears around the upper border, whilst the date “2016” is displayed below the Temple of Heaven.
This celebrated landmark has appeared throughout the Chinese Panda bullion series, providing a consistent visual link between the annually changing releases.
Thirty Grams of .999 Fine Silver
Each coin contains 30 grams of .999 fine silver, equivalent to approximately 0.9645 Troy ounces.
Its combination of precious-metal content, legal-tender status, one-year-only panda artwork and importance as the inaugural metric issue gives the 2016 Silver Panda appeal to both bullion buyers and international coin collectors.
The standard 2016 30g silver issue had a maximum authorised mintage of 8,000,000 coins worldwide.
