Derived from Edmund Spenser's epic poem "The Faerie Queene," the design depicts Una, the virtuous princess who, on her quest to liberate her parents from a dragon's captivity, encounters a lion whose ferocity is tamed by her innocence. This design is based on the classic £5 coin from 1839 by William Wyon and bears the Latin inscription 'DIRIGE DEUS GRESSUS MEOS', which translates to 'May God direct my steps'.
