2016 Australian Lunar Monkey King $1 1oz .999 Fine Silver Colourised Coin – Australia – The Perth Mint
Discover the legendary Monkey King brought to life in precious metal with the magnificent 2016 Australian Lunar Monkey King 1oz Colourised Silver Coin from The Perth Mint. Struck from one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, this remarkable Australian $1 legal-tender release celebrates the Chinese Year of the Monkey through vibrant artwork inspired by Sun Wukong, the mischievous and powerful hero of the celebrated Chinese literary classic Journey to the West. Designed by Song Jian and issued as part of The Perth Mint's Australian Lunar Series II coloured bullion collection, the coin brings together ancient mythology, colourful contemporary engraving and internationally recognised Australian precious-metal craftsmanship.
The reverse showcases the legendary Monkey King seated upon an ornate throne, dressed in elaborate blue, gold and red robes and holding his famous magical staff. Surrounded by stylised mountain peaks, swirling clouds and two playful young monkeys, the design captures the character's lively personality, supernatural adventures and unmistakable presence within Chinese folklore. The carefully applied colour brings depth to the richly detailed clothing, flowing ribbons and dramatic mountainous landscape. The design also includes the Chinese character for monkey, the inscription “Year of the Monkey” and The Perth Mint's traditional “P” mintmark. The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley's elegant crowned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, surrounded by inscriptions identifying Australia, the 2016 issue date, one-troy-ounce weight, .999 silver fineness and official $1 denomination.
Measuring 45.60mm in maximum diameter and 2.60mm in maximum thickness, this distinctive silver coin has a minimum gross weight of 31.135 grams and contains one troy ounce of 99.9% fine silver. The Perth Mint established a worldwide maximum mintage of 100,000 coins for the one-ounce Monkey King design, with an additional distinction for the smaller original presentation allocation of 5,000 individually packaged examples accompanied by numbered certificates. Unless expressly confirmed with the individual stock, a numbered certificate or original presentation case is not included in this Everyday Bullion listing. As a genuine 2016-dated Queen Elizabeth II coin combining the symbolism of the Chinese zodiac with one of Asia's most famous mythological characters, the Monkey King is an exceptional addition to Lunar Series II collections, colourised bullion holdings and collections of Chinese-inspired precious-metal artwork.
