**Reverse – The Iconic E.T. Movie Poster**

The reverse presents a striking colourised interpretation of the legendary artwork associated with Steven Spielberg's 1982 film E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.

The composition uses a rich cosmic-blue background filled with stars and contrasting light, recreating the atmosphere of the film's famous promotional posters.

Dominating the upper portion is an enormous illuminated moon, glowing in pale blue and white.

Against the moon appears the unmistakable silhouette of Elliott and E.T. riding together on a bicycle, suspended high above the Earth.

The image recreates one of the most recognisable moments in cinema history, when the extraordinary abilities of Elliott's alien friend allow their bicycle to soar through the night sky.

Beneath the moon, two hands extend towards one another.

Elliott's human hand reaches from one side, while E.T.'s distinctive elongated finger extends from the opposite direction.

The fingers appear about to touch, recalling the famous promotional artwork created by illustrator John Alvin for the original film.

The imagery evokes the extraordinary emotional bond between the two characters, symbolising trust, friendship and the connection between very different forms of life.

John Alvin's celebrated poster composition was itself influenced by Michelangelo's Renaissance fresco The Creation of Adam, in which two outstretched hands reach towards one another.

The coin therefore celebrates an image with significance not only to cinema but also to the wider history of visual art and graphic design.

The familiar E.T. title appears towards the bottom of the composition, accompanied by THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL in smaller lettering.

The combination of the moonlit bicycle and touching hands creates a miniature retrospective of the film's visual identity.

Unlike conventional commemorative coin designs that present a single character portrait, this rectangular release emphasises the cinematic poster composition.

Its vertical proportions allow the separate visual elements to be arranged naturally, producing a distinctive display reminiscent of original theatrical advertising.

**Obverse – Official Niue Legal-Tender Coinage**

The obverse features the official Public Seal of Niue, establishing the release's status as sovereign coinage.

The word NIUE appears above the central seal, while the year 2022 and denomination TWO DOLLARS are displayed beneath.

The silver-coloured background contrasts with the fully colourised movie-poster reverse.

Additional inscriptions identify the precious metal content as one troy ounce of .999 fine silver.

The lower area also contains official Universal City Studios copyright information, acknowledging the authorised cinematic imagery.

The design is comparatively restrained, with traditional engraved lettering and heraldic detailing.

Unlike the reverse, which celebrates the film through vibrant artwork, the obverse establishes the coin's issuing country, date, denomination and physical silver composition.

**Distinctive Rectangular Format**

This is a rectangular legal-tender silver coin, rather than a conventional round.

Specialist distributor EMK lists the format as 50 × 29 mm.

APMEX's specification table instead displays a 39 mm diameter and 2.98 mm thickness, values more consistent with its conventional one-ounce round-format releases.

Because the actual Movie Poster coin is visibly rectangular, the specialist rectangular dimensions are preferred for the EverydayBullion listing.

The exact thickness has not been independently established for this particular variant.

**Design Significance**

The reverse unites two separate and highly influential elements of E.T.'s original promotional imagery.

The moonlit bicycle silhouette represents the film's extraordinary sense of childhood adventure, while the touching fingers symbolise the emotional relationship between Elliott and E.T.

The original bicycle imagery also became associated with Amblin Entertainment, the production company founded by Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall.

Together, these elements make the silver coin a particularly appropriate commemoration of the film's fortieth anniversary.

**E.T.™ The Extra-Terrestrial – A Landmark in Cinema History**

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial is one of the most celebrated science-fiction films of the twentieth century.

Directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Melissa Mathison, the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on 26 May 1982 before reaching American cinemas on 11 June that year.

Produced by Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, the story follows an alien accidentally abandoned on Earth and the young boy who befriends him.

Rather than focusing on alien invasion, military conflict or technological spectacle, the film approaches science fiction from the emotional perspective of childhood.

Its themes of friendship, loneliness, family and belonging helped distinguish it from many earlier portrayals of extra-terrestrial visitors.

**The Story of Elliott and E.T.**

The central character, Elliott, is a ten-year-old boy living with his mother, older brother and younger sister in suburban California.

His ordinary family life changes dramatically when he discovers an unusual creature hiding near his home.

The visitor is a friendly extra-terrestrial who has been left behind when his companions depart Earth.

Elliott initially struggles to understand the creature but gradually develops a remarkable emotional connection with him.

He introduces his unusual friend to his brother Michael and younger sister Gertie, and the children decide to protect the alien from discovery.

As their friendship deepens, Elliott begins to realise that E.T.'s greatest wish is to communicate with his people and return to his home planet.

The story gradually becomes a race against time as government investigators grow increasingly interested in the mysterious visitor.

The children's determination to reunite E.T. with his own kind provides the film with its emotional climax.

**The Cast and Characters**

Henry Thomas portrays Elliott, giving an emotional performance that became central to the film's success.

Robert MacNaughton plays Elliott's older brother Michael, while a young Drew Barrymore appears as his younger sister Gertie.

Dee Wallace portrays their mother Mary, whose family is adapting to the absence of the children's father.

Peter Coyote appears as Keys, one of the government investigators involved in the search for the alien.

The performances help ground the extraordinary science-fiction premise in recognisable family relationships.

**Steven Spielberg's Vision**

By the early 1980s, Spielberg had already achieved major success with films such as Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

E.T. represented a more intimate approach to filmmaking.

Spielberg's interest in portraying the emotional world of childhood helped shape a story in which friendship and understanding mattered more than elaborate technological explanations.

The central relationship between Elliott and E.T. allowed audiences to experience the extraordinary events from the viewpoint of a child.

The resulting film combined humour, suspense, adventure and profound emotional warmth.

**The Bicycle Flight – An Unforgettable Cinematic Image**

Perhaps the most famous visual sequence in E.T. involves Elliott and his alien companion flying through the night sky on a bicycle.

As the bicycle rises above the ground, the pair passes across an enormous illuminated full moon, creating a silhouette that became one of the film's defining images.

The composition is a remarkable example of cinematic imagery communicating a story without the need for dialogue.

The bicycle represents childhood freedom and adventure, while the illuminated moon suggests the infinite possibilities of the universe.

The image subsequently became central to the film's advertising and to the identity of Amblin Entertainment.

**John Alvin and the Touching-Fingers Poster**

Another defining element of E.T.'s visual history is the celebrated theatrical poster depicting Elliott's and E.T.'s fingertips reaching towards one another.

Created by artist John Alvin, the poster evokes the famous Renaissance fresco The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo.

In the original painting, the outstretched hands of God and Adam nearly touch, creating a powerful representation of life and connection.

Alvin's adaptation of the visual concept provided a striking symbol for the relationship between a human child and a visitor from another world.

The glowing point of contact and deep cosmic background helped make the image immediately recognisable.

Over the following decades, the artwork became one of the most celebrated examples of cinematic poster illustration.

The 2022 Movie Poster Silver Coin recreates this visual theme alongside the equally recognisable moonlit bicycle silhouette.

**The Artists Behind the Flying-Bicycle Image**

The famous bicycle silhouette was also associated with an early 1982 poster design developed by B.D. Fox & Friends.

A small number of early examples were distributed among people associated with the production.

The scene subsequently became central to the film's public identity and remains closely associated with Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment.

The silver coin brings the bicycle composition together with the touching-fingers artwork to celebrate two different aspects of the film's historic promotional design.

**Bringing E.T. to Life**

The film's extraordinary creature was created through an ambitious combination of animatronics, puppetry and practical visual effects.

Special-effects artist Carlo Rambaldi played an important role in the physical creation of E.T., helping establish the character's distinctive appearance and expressive features.

The creature needed to communicate emotion through facial movements, gestures and body language.

Its unusual voice was developed through inventive sound-design techniques associated with Ben Burtt.

These artistic and technical achievements helped convince audiences that E.T. was a believable, vulnerable and sympathetic character.

The film's visual effects were created at a time before computer-generated imagery became the dominant approach to large-scale fantasy cinema.

**John Williams and the Musical Score**

Composer John Williams created the film's celebrated orchestral score.

His music accompanies the story's shifting emotional tone, from childhood curiosity and friendship to danger, separation and extraordinary adventure.

The music associated with the bicycle flight is especially famous, building towards a soaring orchestral passage that reinforces the visual wonder of the scene.

Williams' contribution became one of the defining achievements of the film.

**Academy Award Success**

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial received nine nominations at the 55th Academy Awards, recognising films released in 1982.

It won four Oscars:

• Best Original Score – John Williams

• Best Sound

• Best Sound Effects Editing

• Best Visual Effects

The film was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing and Best Original Screenplay.

These honours reflected the outstanding technical achievements and emotional storytelling that helped establish E.T. as a cinema classic.

**The Cultural Legacy of E.T.**

The film became a major international success and remains one of the most recognisable titles in Spielberg's career.

Its unforgettable imagery, memorable characters and emotional themes have continued to reach new audiences through cinema screenings, home releases, merchandise and commemorative collectibles.

The moonlit bicycle, glowing fingertips and familiar E.T. lettering remain enduring symbols of the film.

The original theatrical posters also have an established following among cinema memorabilia collectors, with specialist dealers and auction houses documenting different historic poster designs and their associated artists.

**2022 – The Fortieth Anniversary**

The year 2022 marked forty years since E.T. first appeared in cinemas.

A series of officially licensed precious metal collectibles was released to commemorate the anniversary.

The Niue Movie Poster Silver Coin interprets the film's extraordinary advertising artwork through one full troy ounce of .999 fine silver.

Unlike the conventional round-format commemorative coins, this release adopts a rectangular format suited to its poster-inspired design.

Its full-colour artwork, official Niue denomination and limited production make it a distinctive tribute to the original film.

**A Limited Edition of 4,000**

The Movie Poster Silver Coin has a confirmed maximum worldwide mintage of just 4,000 examples.

It is presented in original E.T.-themed tamper-evident packaging, featuring cosmic-blue artwork and a commemorative 40th anniversary emblem.

The product combines genuine silver content, officially licensed cinematic imagery and a design that celebrates one of the most memorable examples of movie advertising.

For enthusiasts of classic cinema, Steven Spielberg's films, vintage poster art and distinctive silver coins, the E.T. Movie Poster release provides a meaningful celebration of four decades of cinematic imagination.
